The new convergence-technologies such as the Internet, DV and broad-band are exerting and maintaining archaic power relationship, hiding behind an impression of freedom and interactivity whilst really only seducing and exploiting our desire.
For example seduction is just the same as it ever was: Reality and VR are only newer version of Plato's caves, Ovid's Pygmalion, The American Dream, New Age Cults, etc. They are all are descriptions of similar uniform narratives, all are defined by the need to break free of the mundane physical boundaries to a better almost indefinable place.
- Is there a danger of the Internet and other digital technologies becoming an exclusive controller, maintaining the viewer/receiver within a traditional Marxist relationship?
- Is it ultimately a way to ignore the pressing concerns of global consumption and environmental damage by creating safe but fictitious narratives around us?
- Are we therefore the same as our ancestors, the computer can not change what essentially is inborn.
